Central Subway Chinatown Station: Final Design and Fabrication of Painted Cut Metal Artwork by Yumei Hou

Project Overview

Yumei Hou was selected to create a conceptual design for a multi-part artwork for two locations of the Chinatown Station: Location One is at the Mezzanine Level of the Station Entry and Location Two is in the Ticketing Hall on the Concourse Level. The artwork at the Mezzanine Level will be approximately 14’8” high and 36’8” wide and the artwork at the Concourse Level will be approximately 28’11” high and 35’ wide. The artwork will be comprised of multiple cut metal panels based upon the artist’s cut paper images of traditional Chinese folk dances. The metal panels will be painted red and installed on stand offs of approximately 2” – 3” to cast shadow on the wall behind the artwork.

Project Description

This Request for Proposals is for the final design of the artwork panels based upon the artist’s conceptual design drawings. This work includes the final specification and structural engineering of the standoff attachment hardware based upon the size and weight of the cut metal panels. The final design and specifications will be subject to approval by the Arts Commission before fabrication is authorized. The scope of work also includes the fabrication and delivery of the artwork panels and attachment hardware. A vendor is required to work with the artist to finalize the design including translating the artwork composition into multiple panels for fabrication. The vendor will also produce up to five cut metal panel samples including the finish treatment/paint system in consultation with the artist; fabricate the artwork components in accordance with the approved final design drawings and specifications. The fabricated artwork and components will be packaged and delivered to the Central Subway General Contractor’s off-site storage no later than January 15, 2019. Artwork will be installed by the General Contractor.
