SFAC Galleries at COFFEE + MILK presents Sugar Circus

The Boston Marathon Cream Pie, 2015 by Yukari Sakura

The SFAC Galleries is pleased to present Sugar Circus, a two-person exhibition produced in partnership with Creativity Explored and presented at C+M (Coffee and Milk) War Memorial. Sugar Circus features exuberant works by Camille Holvoet and Yukari Sakura, artists at Creativity Explored, a San Francisco-based organizational dedicated to nurturing and celebrating creative communication by artists with developmental disabilities.

Camille Holvoet joined the Creativity Explored studio in 2001. Her process is an endless discovery, in which – through repeatedly drawing her sacred objects: dessert, ferris wheels, and crossed eyes – the pressures of the past are relieved by the joy of the creative process. She says, “My art are my thoughts about missing different places and people, and the colors remind me of growing up in the 1960's.” Yukari Sakura works with great focus on what she calls her “very own stories,” gathering inspiration from mythological tales, animated films, and video games. Sakura works primarily with watercolor, colored pencils, and paint, rendering vibrantly colored graphic illustrations.

SFAC Galleries Director Meg Shiffler is thrilled about the commitment that SFAC and C+M War Memorial have to present exhibitions featuring the work of artists who participate in some of San Francisco’s best arts nonprofits. “Sugar Circus shines a light on two remarkable talents and introduced the incredible programs at Creativity Explored to broad audiences,” Shiffler says.

Creativity Explored is an internationally celebrated, nonprofit art gallery and professional working studio where over 130 adult artists with developmental disabilities create, exhibit, and sell art. Located in San Francisco, Creativity Explored’s innovative and respected programs, structure, and culture serve as an organizational model in the field of art and disability worldwide. Creativity Explored advocates for studio artists’ work as a valid and increasingly important contribution to the contemporary art world.

Sugar Circus is featured in conjunction with the exhibitions Tiny Bubbles and Civic Art Collection Focus: Roy De Forest on display in the SFAC Main Gallery, May 3 - August 19. Sugar Circus was made possible through a partnership with Creativity Explored with support from Patina Restaurant Group and C+M (Coffee and Milk) War Memorial.
