R-Evolution to Debut in Embarcadero Plaza, A Celebration of Public Art & Civic Revitalization

SAN FRANCISCO, MARCH 18, 2025 – The San Francisco Recreation and Park Department, The Sijbrandij Foundation and Building 180, are proud to announce the arrival of R-Evolution, a breathtaking 45-foot-tall sculpture by Marco Cochrane, set to be unveiled in Embarcadero Plaza on Thursday, April 10, from 5-8 p.m.

Public art has long been a catalyst for revitalization, drawing people to shared spaces and reinvigorating civic life. At a time when San Francisco is working to bring energy back to its downtown core, R-Evolution stands as a symbol of resilience, empowerment, and the transformative power of art.

Art as a Force for Change

Originally created for Burning Man, R-Evolution is a monument to strength, presence, and representation in public spaces. Despite making up more than half the population, women are vastly underrepresented in public art, comprising only 8% of statues in the U.S. This sculpture challenges that imbalance, creating a powerful moment of visibility and reflection.

"This sculpture is about being seen," says artist Marco Cochrane. "Women’s presence in public art is rare. When they are depicted, it is often through outdated or passive narratives. R-Evolution challenges that. She stands strong, aware, and grounded—calling for a world where all people can walk freely and without fear."

Fabricated with over 55,000 welds of steel rod and tubing, R-Evolution is a feat of engineering and artistry. She is not static—she breathes. For one hour each day, subtle movements in her chest simulate breath, reinforcing her presence as a living force in the urban landscape. At night, she illuminates, casting a soft yet powerful glow over the plaza.

Strengthening San Francisco’s Creative Economy

The arrival of R-Evolution aligns with San Francisco’s broader efforts to revitalize downtown. Studies have shown that public art increases foot traffic, enhances economic activity, and fosters cultural engagement. R-Evolution is designed to activate the space—creating a landmark that invites locals and visitors alike to return to the city’s core.

“Public art is a vital part of San Francisco’s cultural identity, embodying the city’s diverse and creative spirit,” said Ralph Remington, Director of Cultural Affairs. “The installation of R-Evolution in Embarcadero Plaza reflects that spirit—bringing people together, activating public space, and reinforcing the power of art to spark conversation, inspire connection, and revitalize our shared urban landscape.”

The installation of R-Evolution is made possible through a partnership with San Francisco Recreation and Parks.

“Our public parks and plazas are more than open spaces—they are places of connection, inspiration, and reflection. Art amplifies this, transforming our shared spaces into living expressions of our values, history, and aspirations,” said Rec and Park General Manager Phil Ginsburg. “R-Evolution is a striking example of how art in parks can challenge perspectives, invite dialogue, and bring people together. We are proud to welcome this monumental piece to Embarcadero Plaza.”

At the feet of R-Evolution, local artists will continue to sell their work, making a visit to Embarcadero Plaza an opportunity to engage with San Francisco’s thriving creative community.

“Public art has the power to enrich our shared spaces, deepen our connection to the city, and make the waterfront more inviting for all,” said Elaine Forbes, Executive Director of the Port of San Francisco. “We commend the collaboration between Recreation and Parks and Building 180 in bringing this meaningful installation to the foot of Market Street, further embedding art into the fabric of our civic life.”
